![]() There's a lot going on in the film, and repeated viewings are helpful, along with an understanding created by reading Tolkien's story. Of course the orcs, wargs and Uruk hai all personify the evil that befalls Middle Earth in this dire time, and their presence instills fear and dread for the heroes all along the way. The "olyphants" were a neat touch and I was happy to see them included. At the same time though, there was almost a comic element to it, whereas his physical features presented here more accurately allowed for a menacing but tortured creature.Įven more fantastic creatures find CGI life in the film I found the presentation of the Ents to be masterfully done. ![]() ![]() I was a bit surprised at the way Gollum was portrayed in "The Two Towers" his cameo appearance in the first film as a slinky black cave denizen more closely resembled Tolkien's description and corresponded to the mental image I took away when reading about it. Gollum's looks are rivaled only by his treachery, and the duality of his personality is given emphasis in the tortured conversations he has with himself. This facet of his character allows Sam (Sean Astin) to portray his devotion and loyalty to his master, particularly when Gollum makes his appearance and becomes their guide. The One Ring begins to deepen it's spell over Frodo who questions his worthiness and stomach for the mission. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli traverse the Riddermark into the realm of Rohan. While Frodo and Sam pursue their mission to Mordor, Pippin and Merry manage to escape the Uruk hai into the Fangorn Forest and their own adventure with the Ents. "The Lord of the Rings" continues it's epic quest in this second installment of the trilogy, as the original fellowship is disbanded and it's various members must continue the good fight. So let’s focus on what I believe are the games largest detractors: the wooden plot and lack of enemy staging. Most of these minor issues are rectified if you play the campaign over in one of the alternate game modes such as classic or survival mode. However, while this is one of Dead Space 3’s greatest strengths, it is again a small detractor of the fear that is missing due to the lengthy periods spent agonizing over weapon stats, rather than worrying about the undead around you. The ability to design, and modify your own weapon from the ground out up can lead to some entertaining results, as you try to determine the most effective way to dismember your enemies. In fact, my favorite part of this new Dead Space is the new weapon customization, which is fantastic. Speaking of weapons, I should point out that like Dead Space 2, there is no “One Gun” achievement, so don’t feel tethered to the plasma cutter. Having to choose my weapons based on the ammo I had at the time, was one aspect from the first Dead Space that keep my heart racing at all times. ![]() For example, the new universal ammo takes away the tension for ammo management. Now there are a lot of small contributing factors to Dead Space 3’s lack of fear. It’s not scary anymore, and as one of the last survival-horror franchises left, this is a huge problem. However, while it does succeed in entertainment, it lacks in a fundamental department: fear. The game is tons of fun, and with multiple difficulties, game modes and a fully-fledged co-op, you defiantly get your money’s worth. ![]() It’s been a week since Dead Space 3 hit stores, so I’ve been spending my days with a healthy dosage of alien dismemberment. ![]() ![]() If you are the artist yourself, you must select the "I created this image myself" ( template ) option when uploading.

There are around 60 cars in the game, ranging in performance and brand. The cars featured in the game vary widely in performance and are ranked into 4 tiers. Winning races and gaining experience will unlock new tracks and cars. These elements remain a dynamic feature of the game which adds a new element to the racing itself. Driving cleanly, setting good lap times, keeping to the racing line, and achieving high speeds are all factors that add to the driver’s experience earned during the race. Players will continue to earn experience not only from completing races, but also performing certain actions on the track. The dual-experience system has been thankfully ditched in favor of a single driver XP progression. Events range from drift, to time attack, to regular lap races across the similar set of tracks from the previous game. Players are still able to progress through the events at their own pace, with the ability to play races that are unlocked in any order. Not alot has changed in the career mode of the game. It gives the game at least a little more personality to grab on to, compared to Shift where a faceless instructor was instructing the player before each race. At least this time around, there are real world drives who help guide you along (as in Dirt 2), and actually have live action movies instructing you on the events. The narrative is still thin, providing little reason to advance from one race to the next except for making money and earning XP. Much like the original, players are once again tasked with starting their career as a pro race driver and working their way to the top, through various tiers and competition disciplines, in hopes of reaching the World Cup. ![]() It feels as fast or faster than turning a physical page, and I don't really notice any delay in turning pages. Now, rather than waiting a second or two for the sluggish page turn animations, it happens almost instantaneously. The device works on any of the best Qi wireless chargers, from flat disks to angled stands. I really appreciated the way it trusted me to find bits and pieces of a person’s life out of order, and figure out how they all fit together without holding my hand. Rapture’s cast enters and exits the story in the same way characters do in a skillfully directed ensemble movie. It felt just as great when a turn of events proved me wrong as it did when one proved me right. I really loved how my theories regarding the mystery kept evolving throughout my playthrough - I continually oscillated between hypothesizing that the events were rooted in religious, alien, or human-caused reasons. I felt compelled to explore every nook and cranny, as doing so almost always added another piece to Rapture’s impressive, mysterious puzzle. Tiny details litter the environment that help add depth to the characters, world, and story: a pair of crutches lay abandoned outside a church, a picnic sits half-eaten on a hillside, and tennis rackets lay strewn about a court as if abandoned mid-game. Well-written audio diaries, fantastic character interactions, and environmental storytelling clues all come together to build a great, mysterious tale. ![]() ![]() From the beginning, Rapture utilizes a slew of effective storytelling techniques to get across its intriguing and affecting tale of a quiet English village whose inhabitants suddenly begin to disappear into swirls of light. |
